Short History of the French Bulldog

Where did this beautiful breed come from?

The French Bulldog is a French breed of companion dog or "toy" dog. It appeared in Paris in the mid-nineteenth century, apparently, the result of crossbreeding of Toy Bulldogs imported from England and local Parisian ratters. It is a stocky, compact dog with a friendly, mild-mannered temperament. Anyone that has spent time with Frenchies, as they are often called, can attest to their loving, friendly, and affable nature

The breed is popular as a pet: in 2020, they were the second-most popular registered dog in the United Kingdom, and the second-most popular AKC-registered dog breed in the United States. They were rated the third most popular dog in Australia in 2017. Their popularity is increasing and so are the different traits that you will find among the many breeders of French Bulldogs.

Here is a breakdown:

The French Bulldog, despite its name, boasts English ancestry. It descends from the English Bulldog, a breed originally bred for the now-outlawed practice of bull-baiting.

  • From England to France: As bull-baiting was outlawed in England, smaller versions of the Bulldog emerged. These "Toy Bulldogs" were less aggressive and better suited as companions. When English lace workers migrated to Normandy, France, they brought these smaller Bulldogs with them.

  • Breeding and Development: In France, these Toy Bulldogs were further bred with local ratters, dogs known for their agility and tenacity. This crossbreeding resulted in a smaller, more compact dog with the Bulldog's characteristic pushed-in face and a more playful temperament.

  • Rise in Popularity: By the mid-19th century, the French Bulldog had gained significant popularity in Paris, particularly among the working class. Their small size made them ideal for apartment living, and their playful and affectionate nature endeared them to their owners.

  • Breed Recognition: The French Bulldog's unique appearance and charming personality quickly caught the attention of the French elite. The breed gained further recognition in the late 19th century with the establishment of the first French Bulldog club in Paris.

  • Global Appeal and AKC Recognition: The French Bulldog's popularity soon spread beyond France. The breed was introduced to the United States in the late 19th century and quickly gained a following. In 1898, the American Kennel Club (AKC) officially recognized the French Bulldog, solidifying its status as a distinct breed in the United States.

  • Modern Popularity: Today, the French Bulldog is one of the most popular dog breeds worldwide, beloved for its quirky charm and adaptability. Its popularity continues to soar, with the breed consistently ranking high in the AKC's annual registration statistics.

The French Bulldog's journey from English Bulldog to beloved companion dog is a testament to the influence of human selection and the remarkable adaptability of dogs. The AKC's recognition played a crucial role in establishing the breed standard and promoting responsible breeding practices in the United States.
